Social Studies - Treat Of Waitangi / Maori Gods

Social Studies - The Holocaust

Today in Social Studies we have been learning about The Holocaust. We also have been learning about Hitler and the Jews, and what Hitler actually said about the Jews. There are two quotes from what Hitler actually said about the Jews and we had to explain how these statements represent anti-semitism. 

QUOTE: “The Jews were responsible for bringing Negroes into the Rhineland with the ultimate idea of bastardising (lowering the quality of) the white race which they hate and thus lowering its cultural and political level so that the Jew might dominate.”

- In this quote Hitler was saying that they lower the quality of the white race. He was also explaining that the Jews were lowering its cultural and political level.

QUOTE: “The Jewish youth lies in wait for hours on end...spying on the unsuspicious German girl he plans to seduce.....he wants to contaminate her blood and remove her from the bosom of her own people. The Jew hates the white race and wants to lower its cultural level so that the Jews might dominate.”

- In this quote Hitler was explaining that the Jewish youth was spying on a unsuspicious German girl and they plan to seduce. Hitler was also explaining that they want to contaminate her blood and remove her from the bosom of her own peoples.

Social Studies - Personal Rubbish Diary

Today in Social Studies we had to create our own graph about the rubbish that we kept track of over the last three days at home. I forgot to keep track of the rubbish so the people that forgot had to copy the data from A, B or C on the google slide on my teachers site. The graph that I have created has the FAULTSPK that you need to have the graph finished. FAULTSPK stands for frame, axis, units, labels, title, scale, plot and key. 

What can be done to reduce what goes in your rubbish bins?

- Your family can be aware about what they buy and the package that it comes in. The products you buy should be more recyclable than general waste. All food scraps in your house hold should be in compost bins.  

Where was the majority of your waste going? Organics, Recycling or rubbish?

- Since I didn't end up keeping track of my rubbish and I was using the given results on the google slide I had to roughly decide where the majority of the rubbish is going. The majority of the rubbish was going inside the recycling bins because maybe mostly of the food packaging that they got was recyclable. 

Did you find one day had more waste than another day? Why was this?

- On the graph it was shown that on day three there was the most total pieces of rubbish going into the bins. On day two there was more general rubbish than there was more of organics.

What % of rubbish can cause a recycling truck to be dumped?

- Trucks containing more than 10% of rubbish have to dump their contents. Since May 4th last year 1960 truckloads of recycling have ended up up at the Kate Valley landfill, costing the council and ratepayers about $1.9m. 

What is going into peoples recycling bins?

- There are still people putting items that belong in the red bins, that don't belong in the recycling bins. There are items such as bagged waste, soft plastics, that don't belong in the recycling. Since it has been happening to has caused problems for the organisations that help and deals with our everyday waste.  

What is the current penalty?

- Bins have been removed from the city council due to the amount of rubbish and waste that has ended up in the wrong bins due to the lazy people. It has been happening all around the country. Many other people have received warnings because of their recycling habits.  

Social Studies - Sustainable Fishing

I wasn't here last lesson so I didn't learn about the shark Finn soup and haven't made a presentation for it.

Sustainable Fishing:

How is commercial fishing a threat to dolphins and bird life (by catch)?

- Bycatch is the unwanted fish and other marine creatures trapped by commercial fishing nets during fishing for a different species. Bycatch is where the marine animals are caught accidentally in nets and on hooks while people are fishing. Bycatch occurs in both recreational and commercial fishing. Every year many marine animals die needlessly including sea lions, sharks, seabirds, turtles and dolphins.

Social Studies - Starfish Poem

What is the main message of this poem?

- The main message of this poem is that you can make a change even if it makes a tiny difference just for that one starfish. The other main message is that we all have to do our own bit to do doesn't matter how small the difference is?

And if I don't throw them in they'll die." "But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. 

You can't possibly make a difference!"

THE  STARFISH  POEM

Once upon a time there was a wise man 

who used to go to the ocean 

to do his writing. 

He had a habit of walking 

on the beach 

before he began his work. 

One day he was walking along 

the shore. 

As he looked down the beach, 

he saw a human 

figure moving like a dancer. 

He smiled to himself to think 

of someone who would 

dance to the day. 

So he began to walk faster 

to catch up. 

As he got closer, he saw 

that it was a young man 

and the young man wasn't dancing, 

but instead he was reaching 

down to the shore, 

picking up something and very gently throwing it 

into the ocean. 

As he got closer he called out, 

"Good morning! What are you doing?" 

The young man paused, 

looked up and replied, 

"Throwing starfish in the ocean." 

"I guess I should have asked, 

why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"

The young man listened politely. 

Then bent down, picked up another starfish

This term in Social studies I have learnt alot about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and the causes and affects on the marine life and us humans life. I have learnt alot about how plastic and rubbish in general affects us humans and the marine life. We had to make a poster about what has been happening including the affects and causes. Social Studies - The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

This week in Social Studies we have been learning about the ocean connecting to The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. 

We have learnt that some of the oxygen that we breath comes from the ocean, if we didn't have oceans we probably would't survive. The great pacific garbage patch is the biggest garbage patch in the world, it is located halfway between Hawaii and California. There is more than 1.8 trillion pieces of rubbish in the garbage patch and ways about 80,000 tones, 80,000 pieces of plastic is about the same weight as 500 jumbo jets.

What was the song about?

- The song was about Lennon expressing his stress after the Beatles. Lennon said that he was fat and depressed and that he was crying for help. Lennon said that the song "Help!" was one of his favourite songs among the Beatles songs that he wrote. 

How different does it sound to music from the 1940's?

- The Beatles had a different style from any other band at the time because they worked in many different genres of music. The Beatles not only changed the way music was being made but they forever changed music.

 

Social Studies - Give peace a chance

What was the main message of the song?

John Lennon's message in the song "give peace a chance" was that war doesn't solve all problems but if you "give peace a chance" it may be a better solution to solve all of the problems in the war. The song says that the most popular subjects are all the gossip or debatable topics and opinions. The way John Lennon sees it, there is no need for that sort of thing in the world, people shouldn't try not to argue and debate.

Social Studies - Significance of WW1

For our third assesment in Social Studies, we had to make a map about WW1 that we have learnt before we created the map for WW1. After we did all that, we had we had to create a blog post to finish and complete this assessment, in the blog post we had to answer questions that was given about the topic and in this video. Here is my blog post that I have completed.

When do you hear this song?

- The chances are that you have heard the last post, the last post is used on remembrance day in the commonwealth of nations. In Australia and New Zealand it is also played on Anzac day, usually before the two minute silence.  

Why is this song significant/important to New Zealand?

-  It is important to New Zealand because when the last post is played we honour those that were lost in the war and those that fought for our country.

What is the history behind the last post - why was it played and when?

-  The last post is played to mourn the dead and to honour those that were lost in wars. The last post is played in New Zealand on Anzac Day or Remembrance Day before the 2 minutes of silence. 

What does this song represent?

-  The last post is represented at military funerals to indicate that the soldier has gone to their final rest and at commemorative services such as Anzac day and Remembrance Day. The last post also represents the wars and battles that the world had gone through.

Social Studies - Parihaka

For our second assesment in Social Studies, we had to make a map about Parihaka and what happened there. After we did all that we had we had to create a blog post to finish and complete this assessment, in the blog post we had to answer questions that was given about the topic. What is Parihaka and what happened there?

About 1600 troops invaded the western Taranaki settlement of Parihaka, which had come to symbolise peaceful resistance to the property of Maori land. Parihaka was a vacant area that was owned by the Maori settlement before they were taken over by the European settlers. The place was a symbol of peace because they resisted the colonisation.

Social Studies - Slave Trade Triangle

For our first assesment in Social Studies, we had to make a map about the slave state that we have learnt before we created the map for the slave trade. After we did all that, we had we had to create a blog post to finish and complete this assessment, in the blog post we had to answer questions that was given about the topic. Here is my blog post that I have completed.

1) Explain the use of Spiritual and what they were.

- Spirituals are songs that the salves sang to express their emotions and to help them escape. After the 2 month boat trip in west Africa the masters went to church except for the slaves because the slaves were not human anymore. While the masters were in the church, the masters thought they were praying to god, but instead they were singing songs to help them escape in their language so the masters didn't know what they were saying.

2) Explain who Harriet Tubman and what the underground railroad was.

- Harriet Tubman was one of the ex slaves that was famous for helping thousands of slaves escape, she used songs to send messages to the slaves. Altogether there were 12 million slaves ,but 1.5 million slaves died on board on the ship, about 10.5 million slaves arrived in America. Harriet Tubman used the underground railroad, which were secret passages used to sneak slaves to escape out of the slave state. Slaves used to swim in the rivers because they didn't have showers so if they went in the rivers than there smell would disappear. If the slaves ran on land than dogs and the masters would be able to track them because of there smell.

3) Write about a spiritual you chose and highlight some lyrics and the hidden messages behind them.

- Wade in the water was one of the spirituals that the slaves sang to send a message to help them escape.

- The hidden messages used was wade in the water, what that mean't was that swimming in the water helped to escape. The other hidden message was God's gonna trouble in the water, what that mean was that god is going to stir up the healing water.

4) How are these events still significant today?

- These events are still significant today because in America people still talk about the debate of the slavery's. Slave songs and spirituals are still used today. It influences the creation of the blues, souls, rnb, gospel, rap and rock n roll.

Social Studies - The breadwinner task

In social studies we have been learning about the breadwinner it is all about a 11 year old girl who must risk herself so her mother and sisters can survive life in Taliban controlled Afghanistan. First we watched the movie about the breadwinner and then we had to do a task about that. The movie took about 2 hours we did't watch it for 2 hours straight because people kept being noisy and naughty. After a couple of days later of watching the movie we had to do a task about the movie THE BREADWINNER. Here is the task that we had to do.

1. How old is Parvana?

• 11 years old

2. Describe what she looks like?

• She looks like a Muslim because that is what he believes are
• During the film/movie she changes from a girl to a boy because only boys were allowed on the sheets and only boys were allowed to buy groceries and ect…
• She was disguised from a girl to a boy because only boys could go to prison to visit

3. Explain what Parvana in interested in and how she spends her time

• Pavana spends her time trying to get her dad from out of prison
• Pavana spends her time selling things to get money to beg the people for her dad to get out of prison
• She is interested in on buying food for her family to keep them not hungry and not staving to death
• She is interested in on getting water from a well into a bucket for her family to put in cups to drink out of so they don't die and so they can keep hydrated

4. What are some of the things that Parvana worries about? Identify and explain an example from the film

• She worries about her family especially he dad when she goes to prison for example because she thinks that the people that took her dad to prison will kill or hurt him
• She worries about getting food for her family for example because she is scared that people are going to find out that she is a girl so she makes a boy voice

• She worries about getting water from the well for example because she is scared that someone is going to attack her

Social Studies - Dictatorship Research

For the last 2 weeks in social studies we have been learning about types of governments. Our teacher Mr Wilson gave us a research task to do about a types of a government for the last 2 weeks and it had to be done. First we had to chose a type of government's here were the options Dictatorship, Totalitarianism, Communism, Republic, Maori law, Monarchy and Feudal system. Then we had to do these following things.
