Social Studies - The breadwinner task

In social studies we have been learning about the breadwinner it is all about a 11 year old girl who must risk herself so her mother and sisters can survive life in Taliban controlled Afghanistan. First we watched the movie about the breadwinner and then we had to do a task about that. The movie took about 2 hours we did't watch it for 2 hours straight because people kept being noisy and naughty. After a couple of days later of watching the movie we had to do a task about the movie THE BREADWINNER. Here is the task that we had to do.

  1. How old is Parvana?

  • 11 years old

  1. Describe what she looks like?

  • She looks like a Muslim because that is what he believes are
  • During the film/movie she changes from a girl to a boy because only boys were allowed on the sheets and only boys were allowed to buy groceries and ect…
  • She was disguised from a girl to a boy because only boys could go to prison to visit

  1. Explain what Parvana in interested in and how she spends her time

  • Pavana spends her time trying to get her dad from out of prison
  • Pavana spends her time selling things to get money to beg the people for her dad to get out of prison
  • She is interested in on buying food for her family to keep them not hungry and not staving to death
  • She is interested in on getting water from a well into a bucket for her family to put in cups to drink out of so they don't die and so they can keep hydrated

  1. What are some of the things that Parvana worries about? Identify and explain an example from the film

  • She worries about her family especially he dad when she goes to prison for example because she thinks that the people that took her dad to prison will kill or hurt him
  • She worries about getting food for her family for example because she is scared that people are going to find out that she is a girl so she makes a boy voice

  • She worries about getting water from the well for example because she is scared that someone is going to attack her

  1. Create a flowchart to describe Parvana's journey in the film

  1. Parvana is sitting down with her father in the market
  • Parvana’s father goes to prison from these evil people
  • Parvana decides to change into a boy to go out to the market
  • Parvana sells things to make money to go to prison
  • Parvana goes to prison to get her father and then she gets pushed away
  • Then Parvana decides to go as a boy to the prison and then got Parvana’s father but he was badly hurt

  •     6. Create a Venn diagram to compare and contrast Parvana with another character. Compare to her friend

    Home Economics - Cupcakes

Today in Home Economics we have baked cupcakes. First when we got in the kitchen we washed our hands and then we put our apron on like we always do. After that we washed our table and then got our recipe and started reading it. Then we got all of the ingredients in their little and big bowls and then got them organised on the table nicely. Next we started making the cupcakes, here is a recipe of the cupcakes.

    125g butter
    3/4 c of sugar
    1t of vanilla essence
    2 eggs (Size 7)
    1 1/2 c of plain flour
    2 t of baking powder
    1/2 cup of milk

First we creamed the butter in a large bowl with a wooden spoon. Then we added the sugar and continued creaming until light and fluffy in texture. Next we added the vanilla essence and beat briefly. After that add eggs one at a time, beat well after you have added each egg. Sift flour and baking powder onto a large plate. After that using a rubber scraper, scrape all the mixture off the wooden spoon. Then add 1/3 sifted flour, baking powder mix and fold in half of the milk using the rubber scraper. After that Repeat step 7 for the next 1/3 flour mix and the rest of the milk. Do not over mix. Add the last of the flour and gently fold this into the cake batter. Carefully spoon cake batter evenly into 12 paper cases. Bake at 180C for 7 min then turn oven to fan bake for a another 6 - 8 min. After that put your cupcakes into the fridge to cool down.

Here is the photo of the whole recipe that we did used.

Here are the pictures of the cupcakes during the making.

Here are pictures after the cupcakes were cooked.

    Buttercream / Viema cream

    50g of Margarine / Butter
    100g - 150g icing sugar
    Flavouring (Essence)

Cream together margarine, icing sugar, flavouring and the food colouring. Spread icing onto cooled cupcakes and decorate with sprinkles or any sweets if available.

The shakespear theme was about Racism, Evil and domestic violence, the set of the performance was on our school stage in the auditorium and it had a background on the stage where they can hide to get changed into there costume. The three people names were Iago, Desdemona and Othello, the roles that they were doing was Iago was the dadum music, Othello was a black soldier and Desdemona was white.

    Home Economics - Ginger Gems

Today in Home economics (Cooking) we have been making ginger gems, they are like ginger bread mens but in gems.

When we got into the cooking room we got our apron on, washed our hands, washed our table and then we mis en place, what that means Is that we get our ingredients ready. After that we got into our groups and then we read the instruction but we made a mistake. What we did is that every group didn't read the instructions properly so we got mucked up.

After that we had two pieces of paper of instructions, one piece of instruction was paper and the other one was laminated. What we did for the paper copies our group write down our names beside the bit of ingredients that we got ready.

After that our cooking teacher told us what to do next with the laminated instruction, what we did is that we did from 1 to 5 on the instructions and then stopped for the next instructions from teacher. Our group didn't need to stop because our group was the first ones done and the other groups were well behind, so we keeped going.

My group put the muffin trays in the oven for a little bit until it was hot. After that Our group had left over butter so we put them into the muffin trays that we got out waiting for them to melt, and that's what every group done. Then we put our batter into the muffin trays. After our group was finished making the Ginger gems we put them into the oven for about 15 minutes.

Then our whole group started doing our dishes we all did our bit, my bit was Putting the equipment away. After that we got our Ginger gems from out o the oven and then got them out of the muffin trays and onto the rack and waited for them to cool down.

Sorry but I forgot to take a photo of the instructions so I cant write them down.

Here are the photos of the Ginger gems that we made.

Back in the old days they used to put the Ginger gems into a metal tray which forms them into houses shapes. Here is a photo of the tray.

Business studies - Rechargeable light bulbs

Today in business studies we had to come up with some ideas on how to make product better and how they can improved. Then we had to discuss what we wanted to do then we had to consider these things, Cost involved and what existing products would be using or competing against. After that we had to start designing our ideas on paper. What my group came up with was rechargeable light bulbs. After we had to answer some questions on this blog post.

What product you are trying to improve?

We are turning a normal light bulb to a rechargeable light bulb

Why you wanted to improve it?

Because we want to upgrade light bulbs to make them more better than they already are.

    What would the changes be?

    • To make the chargeable light bulb to charge longer than it already does
    • To make it more brighter than it already is
