Social Studies - Sustainable Fishing
Shark Finn Soup Topic
I wasn't here last lesson so I didn't learn about the shark Finn soup and haven't made a presentation for it.
Sustainable Fishing:
How is commercial fishing a threat to dolphins and bird life (by catch)?
- Bycatch is the unwanted fish and other marine creatures trapped by commercial fishing nets during fishing for a different species. Bycatch is where the marine animals are caught accidentally in nets and on hooks while people are fishing. Bycatch occurs in both recreational and commercial fishing. Every year many marine animals die needlessly including sea lions, sharks, seabirds, turtles and dolphins.

English - Critical literacy practise
The post said "In Germany, the government has increased fuel prices, in just one hour of time people abandoned their cars on the streets, avenues and walked home. Over a million abandoned cars, they had to lower the prices. When the people are smart the corrupt cant accomplish their goals."
Is the text real?
After searching up major traffic jam, I found the photo but the information I found was that this photo circulated through social media and was labeled as a protest in Germany. The photo was actually taken in Beijing in China, and in fact, it was a massive traffic jam and not petrol prices.
English - Factual or Satirical
Factual and Satirical news websites here:
The Onion (Satirical)
The New York Times (Factual)
The Civilian (Satirical)
The Daily Mail (Factual)
The Daily Mash (Satirical)
The Herald (Factual)
The Shovel (Satirical)
Daily Telegraph (Factual)
All news websites have alot of articles and information but most of the articles seem fake. The websites itself might look like it is believable but they might be satirical, there are alot of ways to find out if they are factual or satirical.
Choose two from the same country, ones has to be one factual and one satirical:
- The Onion
- The New York times
Compare the two articles:
5 things that you could use to check if a website is factual or satirical:
- The name of the website.
- You can see if the website is secure or not on the website.
- The titles of the articles (see if the titles are eye catching or believable)
- Check if the text is up to date and seem believable to you.
- Check if the authors who wrote the article are displayed.

Social Studies - Starfish Poem
What is the main message of this poem?
- The main message of this poem is that you can make a change even if it makes a tiny difference just for that one starfish. The other main message is that we all have to do our own bit to do doesn't matter how small the difference is?
Evidence in the poem?
1. why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?" "The sun is up and the tide is going out.
And if I don't throw them in they'll die." "But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it.
You can't possibly make a difference!"
2. "It made a difference for that one."
Poem:
THE STARFISH POEM
Once upon a time there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean
to do his writing.
He had a habit of walking
on the beach
before he began his work.
One day he was walking along
the shore.
As he looked down the beach,
he saw a human
figure moving like a dancer.
He smiled to himself to think
of someone who would
dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster
to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw
that it was a young man
and the young man wasn't dancing,
but instead he was reaching
down to the shore,
picking up something and very gently throwing it
into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out,
"Good morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused,
looked up and replied,
"Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked,
why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out.
And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that
there are miles and miles of beach
and starfish all along it.
You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely.
Then bent down, picked up another starfish
and threw it into the sea,
past the breaking waves and said-
"It made a difference for that one."

Science - Hydrogen gas & Magnesium Oxide Experiment
Hydrogen Gas Experiment:
Aim: To show that hydrogen gas is produced when metal reacts with acid.
Equipment: A test tube, a boiling tube, bunsen burner, wooden splint, a bottle of acid, a peice of metal, safety glasses
Method: 1. Light your bunsen burner
2. Add your sample of metal to your test tube. Add 2mL of acid.
3. Carefully invert the boiling tube above the test tube containing the metal and acid.
4. Hold the test tubes together for a few minutes, allowing time for the inverted boiling tube to fill with gas.
5. When you think the tube is full, your lab partner should light a wooden splint.
6. Carefully, but quickly, tilt the boiling tube full of gas upwards and insert the burning splint into the mouth of the test tube.
Results: When the acid went with the magnesium it fizzed up, then warmed up, next we lit a wooden splint and put it into the tube a big pop formed almost making us students deaf.
Conclusion: When the hydrogen gas ignited It reacted with the oxygen in the air which released energy
Magnesium Oxide Experiment:
Aim - To make a metal oxide and observe the difference in properties of the product compared to the reactants.
Equipment - A piece of magnesium, bunsen burner, safety glasses, metal scissor tongs.
Method - 1. Light your bunsen burner.
2. Hold your peice of magnesium in the scissor tongs. Ensure you are holding onto the very tip of the magnesium.
3. Place the other end of the magnesium into the bunsen burner (at the top of the blue flame).
4. When the magnesium begins to burn, do not look directly at it, as the light emitted can permanently damage your eyes.
Results: The magnesium ribbon burns with a very bright white light. A white smoke is produced as it burns. When the reaction is over a white powdery substance remains.
Conclusion: The white light is formed because the magnesium reacts with the oxygen to produce magnesium oxide releasing energy.

Social Studies - The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
This week in Social Studies we have been learning about the ocean connecting to The Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
We have learnt that some of the oxygen that we breath comes from the ocean, if we didn't have oceans we probably would't survive. The great pacific garbage patch is the biggest garbage patch in the world, it is located halfway between Hawaii and California. There is more than 1.8 trillion pieces of rubbish in the garbage patch and ways about 80,000 tones, 80,000 pieces of plastic is about the same weight as 500 jumbo jets.
Here is a slideshow that I have created with some questions that I have answered.

Science - Alkaline Metal Blog
1) What is an Alkaline Metal?
- It is a metal that gets really explosive easily because it is in the first group in the periodic table on the left that is highlighted in red. Alkaline Metal is alot softer than most metals
2) Where are they on the periodic table?
- It is in the first group in the periodic table that is highlighted in red.
3) What Reaction did we do yesterday?
Observations: When the Alkaline Metal went into the warm water it blew up because Alkaline is in the first group of the periodic table and the metals that are in the first group are the ones that get explosive really easily. First when the Alkaline went into the water it started to fizz a bit, then flames started to form inside the water and then it blew up. When it blew up there was little flames that went everywhere that it looked like a firework.
Products & Reactants: Sodium Metal and Water + Sodium Oxide and Hydrogen Gas
Chemical equations: NA + H2O --------------------- Na2O + H2
4) Why do these metals react this way?
- It only has one Electron in the outer shell.
