Today in business studies we have been learning about production lines and what they do. For our task today we had to research about production lines and answer the questions that was on the Business Studies site. Then we had to present it on something to make it look good and presentable, I chose to make a slideshow. Here is my slideshow of the work that I have completed today.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Angles and Movement shots
Shot 1:
- High angle - makes the character 'other Wybie' look small, weak and valnerable.
- POV - Other mother - dominant & powerful
- Medium shot - gives us some idea of background but not full
- Audience feels powerful, we are looking down on Wybie through other mothers POV. Sad / worried for Wybie - he looks small, sad, insentient. First character in other world to suggest something is not right
- Directer purpose make us feel sorry for Wybie. Make audience think that maybe the other mother isn't so nice foreshadowing.
In the shot with the other Wybie and the other mother, high angle shots are used effectively to show the theme looks can be deceiving! This is demonstrated through a high angle shot from the point of view of the other mother. She is looking down the front porch steps at a scared other Wybie. This makes the audience feel sorry for Wybie and makes the other mother seem powerful. The purpose of this scene was to make the audience think that maybe the other mother isn't so nice after all. Combined with the use of lighting, Wybie is in a warm light but surrounded by darkness, the directer has created an atmosphere of caution - something is not right. This reminds the viewer of a later scene where Coraline is looking up at the other mother in horror as she throws her through a magical portal into a locked room. This shows that looks can be deceiving because the other mother wasn't nice like Coraline first thought.
Shot 2:
Dutch tilt - It makes Coraline look like she is being stalked because
POV - The doll / 'Other Mother' - creepy and watched.
Mid long shot - Gives a creepy feel to a normal world
Mid long shot - Gives a creepy feel to a normal world

Literacy - Film Study Coraline Mindmap
This week in Literacy we are still learning how to write a film study about Coraline. There are 2 activitys that we could chose from for that period and the 1st activity was to use coogle, create a mind map showing as many examples from our visual text of one of the themes listed above. Include an explanation of the theme. The 2nd option was to write a theme guide booklet for a student to use whilst viewing. Explain how each theme is shown in the film and give them times to stop and look, quotes and key moments to watch for. Present this creatively. I chosen the 1st activity because it looked easier and funner. Here is a photo of the activity that I have done.
What am I learning?
- I am learning to analyse the ideas and themes of a film
How does this work show my learning?
- To discuss the way a theme or idea is portrayed in the text
What am I wondering as a result of this learning?
- To show my understanding of these themes by completing one of these task below.

Home Economics - Mini Savourys & Apple Turnovers
Yesterday in Home Economics we made mini Savoury's and apple Turnovers, it was a tough and stressful day. The reason is because we are the controlled group and we finished making ours first so after that only our group made apple turnovers because everyone was still making theres. The apple Turnovers were men't to be for everyone but the time they finished cooking and finished being cooled it was 10 past 3 and everyone left after making there's and cleaning up.
First when we got into the kitchen we got our aprons on and sprayed the table and ect to get ready for the lesson. The recipe was a bit different because in the instructions it had the amount of the ingredients in the instructions. Then we read over the recipe and everything we need and then we got our mese on play ready. After that we started making the mini Savours, here is the recipe.
1/2 sheet press rolled pastry
Using the pastry cutters cut circles to fit party pans. Chill in fridge. Mix 1 egg, pinch of salt, 1T milk. Whisk together with a fork. Transfer egg mixture to a measuring cup. Place some thawed peas and corn in each pastry case. Carefully pour egg mixture into each case. Dont spill any!!! Bake at 200c for about 8-10 mins. Cool and eat.
After they were finished cooking we started doing the dishes and then cleaned up the working space. After we got the other recipe for the apple Turnovers next we read through it as per normal and then started rushing because we had not much time left. Here is the recipe for the apple turnovers.
About 200g puff pastry
2 green apples
2 Tbsp caster sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
Turn oven to 190c and roll pastry out thinly. Cut into 6 squares 14 x 14cm. Peel and core apples then cut into quarters, Slice very thinly. Put a few slices of apple in corner of the pastry. Sprinkle apple with a teaspoon sugar, add a pinch of cinnamon. Fold over into neat triangles, press edges with fork to seal well. Prick a hole in top then sprinkle a little sugar over. Place on a baking tray and bake for 20 minutes.
Forgot to take the photos of the process of the apple turnovers but took a photo of the apple turnovers and the recipe:
After the apple Turnovers were cooled we had like 6 each because everyone was gone and then we were finished for the day.

Arthritis Research
On Tuesday we have been learning about arthritis. After that we had to do some research about arthritis and answer the questions. During that time our teacher asked certain people to come up at the time to look and animal bones and the meat, muscles and ect... First when we came up we had to put gloves on if you wanted to touch them. After I put some gloves on we were allowed to touch them for a little bit and they felt really gross and hard. There were 2 types of animals legs and they were cow and pig legs and they were massive. Then our teacher told us all of the muscles and bones that were on there. The bones smelt disgusting and foul, I almost spewed. Then we had to wash our hands to clean up for the next people to come up. Here are the questions and answers that I did.
What are the causes of arthritis??
- A reduction in a normal amount of cartilage tissue causes some forms of arthritis
Can everyone get arthritis? Who is most likely to get arthritis?
- Not everyone gets arthritis because it is not an inevitable condition. People can get the disease who have none of the known risk factors
What are the two most common types?
- Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis
What are ways to prevent arthritis?
- Eating certain fish are rich in omega 3 fatty acids which are healthy
- Control your weight cause your knees have to support your body weight
- Exercise
- Avoid injuries
- Protect your joints
- How is it treated?
- Arthritis can be treated by resting at home or physical therapy,

Business Studies - Opportunity Cost
On Friday we were learning about opportunity cost and what that means is you have a couple of options and the second one that you have left out is opportunity cost. Here is an example Sarah only has 1 hour until bedtime. You can read a book, play a game or bake a cake. She picks to play a game and the second choice is opportunity cost which was to read a book. After we learnt all of that there was an activity that we had to complete within that lesson. What we had to do was to make a powtoon to show the scenario and what Sarah opportunity cost is.
Here are some screenshots of my powtoon

Workshop 1: Unpacking themes and ideas?
Theme/Idea: Something that links throughout the story.
Looks can be deceiving
- Things aren't always what they seem
Example 1: The deldam / The other matter
- She starts off good / kind but is revealed to be an evil soul devouring metal spider demon.
- Shows theme because the other mother changes gradually over time so that Coraline & audience dont notice
- Important to the story because helps the audience understand Coralines choice when she realises that having everything perfect wont make her happy.
Example 2: Other world vs Real world
- The other world is a perfect web / trap to catch Coraline, where as the real world is boring but safe.
- Shows theme because even though the other world seems better in every way, the real world is actually better/safer because it isn't a trap
- Important to help audience understand why Coraline goes back to the real world
SEXXY paragraph:
Statement - In Coraline, themes and ideas are used effectively.
Evidence - For instance, the theme 'looks can be deceiving' is shown through the character of the 'Other mother' starts kind, but is revealed to be soul devouring demon.
eXplanation - audience - This makes the audience feel that we shouldn't trust things or people that seem perfect at first glance.
eXplanation - director - This was done to make the audience feel weary or develop a sense of caution towards new situations
- Coinciding with this is the use of colour to show the other mother to becoming more evil. At tje start she is surrounded by warm colours that make us feel safe, but by the end it is dark with neon green which makes her seem dangerous.
Your link - This theme is also shown through the changes in the 'other world' as it is revealed to be a spider web designed to catch Coraline.

Science - Hand making
Today in Science we have been learning about bones and what they do and ect... In Science we have a big plastic skeleton and our teacher was showing us what bone was what. After that we had 2 options they were to make a blog post and talk about what a hand does and ect.. or to make a hand showing what it does. I chose to make the hand and so I did it. Once it was finished we had to make a blog post and answer some questions so thats what I am doing now.
Explain how the hand moves and how your model shows this...
Explain how the hand moves and how your model shows this...
- The hand moves by pulling the strings aka muscles for the fingures to move. The string represents the muscle and the straws represents the bones that are in the hand.
Tendons:
- Tendons allow you to bend your fingures and they are tissue that connect muscles to bone. Tendons pull on bones.
Ligaments:
Ligaments attached bone to bone
Cartilage:
Cartilage stops the 2 bones from rubbing against each other

Home Economics - Pikelets
Yesterday in HE we made pikelets and they were delicious. First when we got there we put our aprons on and got our container and ect.... to get ready for the session. After all that we got our mese on play done which means we have all of our ingredients ready on the table. After that we read the recipe to see what we need to do today. Here is the recipe of the piklets.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1 egg
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup milk
METHOD
Sift the flour, baking powder and the salt into a bowl. In another bowl beat the egg and sugar with a whisk until pale and thick. Add the egg mixture and the milk to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gently heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and add or brush with a little melted butter. Drop tablespoonfuls of the mixture from the point of the spoon onto the surface. When bubbles start to burst on the top of the pikelets, turn them over and cook the second side until golden. Place on cooling rack to keep cool. Last serve with a sweet or savoury topping
Here is a photo copie of the recipe.

HE - Chocolate Chip Cookies
Yesterday in HE we made chocolate chip cookies and they were delicious. First when we got to the cooking room we got our containers and then washed our hands as per usual and washed our table and ect... Then we started looking at the recipe to see what we needed. After that we did the mese on play which means we got all of the ingredients and then put them all up onto the table nicely. Unfortunate I forgot to take a photo of the mese on play but I did take photos of the baking process. Then we Started doing out thing and started making the chocolate chip cookies. After that we did the dishes and waited and waited for the cookies to cook then they were ready, and then we took them out and waited for them to cool down. The product looked good but we didn't mix in the sugar so they were very sweet, and so they looked very crumbly but they still did taste amazing. Here is the recipe for the chocolate chip cookies.
The recipe makes 15 but we only made 12 cookies for 3 each person in group.
100g butter
1/2 cup Chelsea white sugar
1/2 cup Chelsea soft brown sugar
1 eggs
1 tsp vanilla essence
1 1/2 cups flour
pinch of salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cups chocolate chips
Method:
Melt butter, and add both sugars and cream these together. Beat in the eggs and vanilla then mix in the dry ingredients. Roll into medium sized balls, making sure the mixture is not too wet! Put on a well greased baking tray. The shouldn't spread too much so flatten slightly. Bake at 180 for 8-10 minutes
Tips: You can easily half this recipe. Or roll half into a log, wrap in cling film and freeze. Cut into 15 pieces while still frozen and bake.

Opening Scene:
The 'real' neighbours:
Opening Scene:
- Music - Sounds quiet creepy and it also sounds like a music box or child's. There are also some lyrics that say dreaming over and over again. At the start the music gets quiet and then louder.
- Perspective: The other mother POV we see from her, know its her by the needle hands.
- Use of close up shot - makes audience focus on the doll not on the creator.
- Lighting / colours - Dim, dark, green, faded, - Sets the mood / atmosphere that its old, building looked abandoned, unappealing and run down.
Setting - Pink palace - real world
- Music - Sounds happy, gentle, harmony, chanting, sung by children, lyrics in a made up language, makes calm happy atmosphere. Changes to increase fension - faster, louder, miner
- Coraline - Sassy, moody, stubborn, bright colours - blue hair, yellow jacket and boots. main character makes us focus, shows shes different from these in the real world.
- Colour / lighting - Dull grey, boring, dark, bland, tinted, makes the 'real house' feel depressing, old, crusty + cold, not a place Coraline wants to be
- 'Real parents' - Dull, workaholics, dont have time for Coraline, not happy, depressed, tired
The 'Other World':
- Music - Spooky music, doesn't match what we are seeing, slow to medium pace, minor, quiet
- Colour / lighting - Bright, vibrant, warm, welcoming - makes it feel inviting and safe, Coraline doesn't stand out anymore
- Other parents - Fun, active, show Coraline attention, energetic, cooked her nice meals, they look happy & healthy unlike the real parents.
The 'real' neighbours:
- Colour - Greys, dark, mournful, sad colours - pallets, foggy, washed out, rundown, dusty, sticky
- Lighting - Dark/gloomy - inside house cold light, Shobby, dark, poor
- Music - Bland, background, medium, latin skyk, upbeat, movement
- Setting - Forest looks dead, house is old, rustic, rundown, basement, theateroom, used to be fashionable, now is dated
