Today in Business Studies we had to choose one activity out of two activitys and they were to create a flowchart to help direct people on making smart decision when it comes to borrowing money OR to create a infographic to help people understand what credit is, the pros and cons of loans, and how to make a smart decision on how to choose who to get a loan from. I chose to do the first one because it was the easiest one to do and mostly everyone was doing it. Here is the flowchart that I have created.
I am a student at in Uru Mānuka. In 2020 I was a year 9 and in 2021 I will be a year 10. This is a place where I will be able to share my learning with you. Please note....some work won't be edited - just my first drafts, so there may be some surface errors. I would love your feedback, comments, thoughts and ideas.

Health - Cannabis Discovery Task
For the last month or so in Health we have been set a task to create a presentation about a topic of our choice but before we created the presentation we had to plan out\r questions for our topic so we know what to research about. First we had to choose a topic on what we want to do.
Here are our choices for out topic:
- Gender issues in sport
- Discrimination or racism
- Drugs on the mind & body
- Effects of gaming on the mind & body
- Steroids in sports
- Illness (pick one)
- Effects of social media on the mind
- Brain development during teenage years/neuroscience
- Coping strategies in practise
- Binge drinking
- Mental health/the mind
- Vaping
OR any relevant health topic that is approved by your teacher
My topic that I chose to do was cannabis because it is an interesting topic to do. After we had chosen our topic we had to create 5 big questions to find out for our topic. After that we had to answer them 5 big questions so we knew what to write when we had to create a activity to present this on. Then we had to explain how it will improve wellbeing in the short term and long term. After that we had to create our activity to present. I chose to present this activity on prezi.
Here is a link to my planning sheet:

Plan a social event - Business Studies
For the last 2 weeks in Business Studies we had to chose one out of two task for this activity and the two activitys were we had to chose to plan a sports event or a social event and I chose to plan a social event because it was the easiest one to do. For the social event we had to make considerations for our planning and the planning considerations were we had to choose a venue, lighting, security, band/dj, drinks, food, decorations, cleaning supplies, cups/plates that you can hire and advertising/marketing.
Here is photo of the whole planning sheet:
Science - Distillation Experiment
Today in Science we are doing a distillation experiment and there are 2 parts to the experiment. The first part of the experiment is evaporation and what is going to happen is there is going to be a liquid which is turning into gas and that = heat. The second part of the experiment is condensation and what is going to happen is there is going to be a gas which is turning into a liquid and that = cooling.
Aim: To separate a solution (Coke / Coke Zero) to form a solid + a liquid.
Hypothesis: I think that the coke inside the conical flask is going to evaporate through the delivery tube and the liquid will turn clear inside the test tube. The reason the coke is going to evaporate is because when the coke gets heated by the bunsen burner, the coke is going to boil up with is going to make the coke evaporate. I think that both liquids will be the same for both cokes because it will lose the solids added to both of them. In the regular coke I think the sugar will stay as a solid while most of the other products in the solution will be a liquid. In the coke zero I think instead of the sugar the sweetener will stay solid/
Equipment: A solution of coke / diet coke, conical flask, heatproof mat, a delivery tube and bung, Bunsen burner, tripod, gauze mat, retort stand, boss head and clamp, test tube.
Method:
1. Set up the equipment as shown in the diagram.
2. Add approximately 50mL of coke to your conical flask.
3. Light your Bunsen burner, open the air hole and gently push your Bunsen burner under the tripod.
4. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated. Turn off your Bunsen burner.
Observation: What I saw happened was the coke boiled under the heat and the liquid evaporated through the delivery tube. We caught the liquid and it was clear while the solid stayed in the flask. The solid that was left was sugar. The sugar in the coke zero was like a small brown sludge like the regular coke but looked more like dust.
Conclusion: My hypothesis was correct because like I said in my hypothesis, the coke would boil because it was getting heated by the bunsen burner which made the coke evaporate through the delivery tube. The liquid that was trapped in the test tube was clear like i said in my hypothesis as well. The regular coke had more sugar because their was more solids in the regular coke than their were in the coke zero.

Business Studies - Social event or Sports event
This week in Business Studies we have been learning how to plan out a social or a sports event using budgeting. First we had to get into pairs or you could be by yourself within our table, I chose to do it on my own because I wanted to do it myself and it was a bit more easier. After that we had to choose 1 out of 2 options, the 2 options were to plan out a social event or to plan out a sports event. I chose to plan out a social event because it was the easiest one to do and mostly everyone was doing it. If you chose to do a social event you had to click on a link and if you were to do a sports event you had to click on that link, it would take you to a page were it told you what you had to plan out and how much your budget was. The budget that everyone had was $5,000. Here is a photo of what it looked liked.

Smoothies - Home Economics
Today in HE we made smoothies and some were delicious and some were gross. When we got into the kitchen we did our per usual things as I always say at the start on every HE blog post. When we were finished doing that we went to our working table each group had a different recipe to make smoothies. Our group had to make the mango and banana smoothie and it was alright, when every group finished making there smoothies we had to go around each table and try them to see what one was better and we had to write it down with the results. Here are all of the ingredients for the smoothies and the full results.
...........................................................................................................................................................................
The frozen fruit yogurt smoothie:
Ingredients:
Sorry but I forgot to to write down the ingredients
Results:
9/10
This smoothie was quiet thick but it taste delicious, this smoothie actually was 1 of the best smoothies that one group made today. This smoothie actually tasted like a smoothie but the other ones just tasted like a soft drink.
The flavour was quiet delicious with all of the fruit that they had in it
I definitely would have again
........................................................................................................................................................................
Fresh fruity breakfast smoothie:
Ingredients:
1 cup cold milk or soy milk
1 weet-bix (crumbled up)
1 banana, chopped
1/2 cup fresh or frozen berries
Results:
1/10
This smoothie mostly tasted like a weet-bix smoothie and it was awful. I love weet-bix by itself but not in a smoothie.
The smoothie was very thick, chewy and disgusting. It was not a smoothie it was like a chewy disgusting thick shake. This would be good for a morning smoothie / thick shake as it has weet-bix in it
I would definitely not have it again.
........................................................................................................................................................................
Peach yogurt smoothie:
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cup sliced peaches (fresh, frozen, or well drained tinned chopped peaches)
1/2 cup Greek yogurt
1/2 cup very cold milk (best frozen in an ice cube tray beforehand)
1 T honey
Vanilla ice cream (optional ingredient)
Results:
Sorry but I forgot to write down the results for this smoothie
...........................................................................................................................................................................
Super berry smoothie:
Ingredients:
125g frozen mixed berries eg raspberries, strawberry's, blueberry's
125ml yogurt
50ml cold milk
10 - 15g rolled oats
1 tsp honey
Results:
1/10
This smoothie tasted very sour and it tasted disgusting. The smoothie was very chewy and thick and it just wasn't the one for me
I probably would have again
..........................................................................................................................................................................
Easy banana ice cream smoothie: Was made in a food processor
Ingredients:
2 or 3 bananas (peeled, sliced and frozen)
Results:
6/10
This smoothie tasted quiet nice and cold because the bananas were very cold from when they were in the freezer for a few hours.
The texture was quiet thin and chewy, the texture was also very runny
I probably would have again
...........................................................................................................................................................................
Our group: Mango and banana smoothie
Ingredients:
½ tin well drained mango slices (cut into pieces)
1 banana - sliced
200ml orange juice or pineapple juice (cold)
½ small apple - optional (cut into small pieces)
2 or 3 small ice cubes
Results:
8/10
Our smoothie tasted quiet sweet and moist, It was good compared to most of the groups
The flavour was alright but it wasn't the best but It would of been better if there was ice.
From my perspective I probably wouldn't have often but I would have it again sometime
........................................................................................................................................................................
The mystery smoothie:
For this smoothie no one knew what was in this smoothie except for the group that had made this smoothie. In this smoothie there was a special ingredient that no one knew what it was.
Ingredients:
Ice cream
Yogurt
Mixed berry's eg raspberries, strawberry's, blueberry's
Milk
Weet-bix
Honey
Vanilla essence
Results:
12/10
This smoothie was the best one of all because it was just right, it had all of the ingredients mixed together and it was delicious. I was surprised because I didn't know there was honey or vanilla essence in it until our teacher told us all of the ingredients.
I definitely would have it again, I could have it everyday if I could.
The special ingredient was the vanilla essence

Dilution Experiment - Science
Definition for Dilution: Making something less concentrated. There will be less particles in the liquid.
Concentration: How strong something is.
Aim: To make a dilution series to investigate concentration.
Hypothesis: I think the first test tube will have the most dilute liquid because it would have more added to it in the start.
Equipment:
A potassium permanganate crystal
Six large test tubes
Tweezers
A plastic transfer pipette
A test tube rack
10 mL measuring cylinder
Method:
1. Place the six test tubes in a test tube rack. Label the rack with numbers 1-6
2. Using the measuring cylinder, fill test tube 1 with 10 mL of water. Fill the remaining test tubes with 5 mL
of water.
3. Using your tweezers, add a single crystal of potassium permanganate to test tube 1
4. Gently shake the test tube until the crystal has dissolved.
5. Using the transfer pipette, carefully remove exactly 5 mL from test tube 1 and pour it into test tube 2.
6 Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly to ensure that no purple solution remains.
7. Gently shake test tube 2 and repeat the transfer process, transferring exactly 5 mL of solution from test
tube 2 to test tube 3.
8. Rinse the pipette again and repeat the transfer process for test tube 4, 5 and 6.
Was my hypothesis right: Yes because overtime the mixture was more watery and watered down. This makes it more dilute, and the first one was the least dilute
How do I know how this happen: This happens by the mixture overtime become more dilute as it was moved more into more water.
Filtration Experiment - Science
Aim: Separate a mixture we have made using filtration.
Hypothesis: I think that it will just mix the two colours together and I think they wont separate because they are both liquid. I also think that when the copper sulfate goes through the filter paper and the funnel the colour will change from blue to clear. The things we are mixing in copper sulfate which is blue and sodium carbonate which is clear. I think it will go pale blue because one of the liquids are different and different coloured. Since they are both liquids they will not split and both liquids will go through the filter
Equipment:
Copper sulfate
Conical flask
Stirring rod
200mL, beaker
Funnel
Filter paper
Method:
Pour approximately 50ml of copper sulfate solution into a beaker.
Add the same volume of sodium carbonate solution. A reaction will happen, you should see a cloudy blue precipitate form. Called copper carbonate.
Watch demo then fold filter paper to fit inside the funnel
Place the funnel with the filter paper inside of it, into the mouth of a conical flask
Stir the mixture in the beaker, then carefully pour it into the funnel.
Observe what happened

First when we got into the kitchen we did our per usual thing which is to put on out aprons, wash our hands, Wash our working table and look at the recipe so you know what you are making. I dont know know why everytime I make a blog for home economics I always say what we do when we first get into the kitchen. Here are the ingredients that we used.
Ingredients:
12 rice paper sheets
½ avocado, sliced
½ cup coriander, chopped roughly
¼ cup Thai
basil leaves
1 carrot, sliced finely
¼ cucumber, sliced finely

Business Studies - Budgeting guide
This week In Business we are still learning about budgeting and what it is. We are doing the same thing as last week where we have to pick one thing to do out of 2 things and the two things are to create a budgeting guide to help other learn budgeting skills. Explain what budgeting is and what key things to keep in mind when creating a budget. Present this creatively Or to create a screencastify sharing a budget you have created and explain what a budget is and why you have designed the budget the way you have. I choose to do the first one because it is the easiest one for me cause I dont like my voice to be videoed.
Here is my budgeting guide that I have made.

PE - Gymnastics
In PE for the last 2 weeks we have been doing gymnastics and learning some gymnastic basics. The first day of gymnastics we watched some videos of people doing really cool gymnastics and videos of people doing gymnastics and injuring themselves to show that gymnastics is dangerous and you need to take it seriously. After that we went into the gym to do some exercises and stretches before we got into doing gymnastics.
The first thing I saw when I walked into the gym I saw the trampoline so I went straight to it and was the first one on it. I like the gymnastic trampolines because they are bigger and way bouncer. After that I went to the bar and stuff on there that we got told. Then I went onto the beam and did some stuff on that, that we had to do.
The next day when we did PE there was a mini tramp right next to the big mats so I went there just to play around and jump on people off from the mini tramp. Next I went to the funnest thing in the gym with was the trampoline and on a peice of paper it had things to do on the tramp. Then I went to the bar and did some things on that, then I went onto the beam and did some jumps over the cone and it was quiet hard.
Here is the photo of the peice of paper with all of the things we had to do on the trampoline.
Here is a photo of the trampoline.

Business Studies - Budgeting language dictionary
In Business studies we are learning about budgeting and what it is. When we first learnt about it we had to do a couple of activitys about what is budgeting and now we are doing this blog post for out report for business studies. For this blog post we have to chose 1 activity out of 2 of them and I chose the second one because it is much easier. The activity I chose was you have to make a budgeting language dictionary explaining what each term is and how it relates to budgeting.
Here is my budgeting language dictionary.
Budget - Budget is where you have money available to spend. If you dont have a limit its important because it helps you limit your odds of going into a deficit.
Spend - Spend is where you buy something using money for example you have to give money to pay for goods or services otherwise you don't get it. If you want a house, a car or something you have to give the money to the owner to be able to purchase it.
Savings - Savings it where you have extra money that you haven't spent yet, If you have spend the money you have for your budget it is always good to have saving because then you can use it.
Price - Price is the amount of money expected to be given to the owner that is selling the product or something else that has a price on it.
Needs - Needs is something that is essential to your life for example you need education to get somewhere in life you may not want it but you really need it in the real world, you need to be good at maths, spelling reading and the essential things you need to know.
I think I did quiet good because I wrote heaps of information to help people understand what each word meant. I got some of this information from dictionary.com for reference and then I put it into my own words.

The Marketing Mix - Place
In Business Studies we have been continuing on doing the 4 blog posts for our assesment about market day, this is the third blog post so far which is about the place on where we are going to sell our products and there is 1 more blog post to go to finish this assesment.
Where will you be producing your product? (do you need a specific space)
- We will be producing our product outside where our stand is going to be to sell our products. We need to be outside because if we are selling all of our products there will be alot of people and we need to be somewhere that is hot so then the food dont go cold.
Where would be a good location for your product on market day? (Inside, outside, quiet corner, middle of the room)
- A good location would be outside where there is sun so then when the sausage sizzle is cooked they need to stay hot. The location needs to be in a cold area as well so then the toffee apples can stay cold and not hot so then they can taste better.
Pedestrian and traffic flow (does your business rely on people walking pass or is your product unique enough that people will seek you out?
- Yes our business is going to make people come and buy all of it because I just have a feeling it will and everyone loves sausage sizzle on a nice day and toffee apples as a treat.
Competition - who else will be selling similar products to you on market day? How will your product stand out?
- I am not sure because I dont know if anyone is doing the same thing as us on market day

The Marketing Mix - Price
In business studies we have been continuing on doing the 4 blog posts for our assesment about market day. This is the second blog post so far which is about the price of our product that we making and selling. After this blog post I have 2 more blog posts to go about the place and promotion and then I am done for this assesment about market day
How did you work out what price you were going to sell your product at?
- We were thinking of an reasonable price for the toffee apples and the sausage sizzles because if we were going to see the products at a expensive price then no one will buy the products and we wouldn't make any profit. We decided to make the toffee apples $1.50 and $2.00 for the sausage sizzles because if you see people selling sausages outside of the warehouse or somewhere they are about $2.00 each and there is alot of people buying them.
How will you ensure that your product is worth the price you are asking people to pay (quality control)?
- The toffee apples are worth the product because they are $1.50 each and that is a very cheap price for a big item. They are worth the price because mostly everyone likes to eat a candy covered in a apple because it is delicious and it is fun to eat with. The sausage sizzles are worth the product because they are $2.00 each and that is quiet cheep for a sausage and everyone love sausage sizzle
What price are others (B&E group/real world business) charging for the same good (use a table to show this)?
- There is a another group doing sausage sizzle but I am not sure how much they are selling it for or what their business is called
What else will you consider when it comes to the price of your product?
- Our group have not considered doing anything else for the price, it is still the same
Friday, 18 September 2020
The marketing mix - Product
(Features) What is the product, what can they do, how are they used, what is their purpose?
- The product is a food item that you can eat and sell for a bit of money. The toffee apples are covered in toffee and are on a stick so then it is used by holding the stick to eat the toffee apple so the toffee doesn't get onto your fingures. The purpose is to make people want to buy a delicious food because people like a treat and food every now and again
What quality is your product?
- The product toffee apples are going to be in all different sizes because apples come in all different sizes anyway. The toffee apples are going to be blue and red because they are colours that stand out and the texture will be quiet hard because toffee is hard. The sausage sizzle will taste like a normal sausage with bread and sauce but we might get spicy sausages or chicken sausages just to make it different, the texture is going to be like a normal sausage because the texture isn't going to be any different.
Size / Volume / shape?
- The product toffee apples are going to be in all different sizes because apples come in all different sizes anyway. The shape of the toffee apples are going to be circle like the apples are normally are. The size on the sausage depends on what it is because american hotdogs are long and skinny but normal cheese sausages are big and not that long. The shape of the sausages are going to be kind of like a long oval shape but I don't really know what shape they are.
Packing?
- The sausage sizzle isn't going to have any packaging because sausages don't have packaging cause they are hot and cooked. The toffee apples might have packaging but we haven't decided yet because we don't know what they would be packed in.
Ingredients / Raw materials
- The ingredients that we are using for the toffee apples are 20 apples, sugar, water, cream of tarter, food colouring and vinegar. The ingredients that we are using for the sausage sizzles are bread, onion, butter, sauce and sausages. The raw materials that we might be using are for the packaging for the toffee apples but we don't know what packaging we are using yet if we are using it.
Does it fit into a category of products that already exist?
- Candy apples, sausage sizzle
Do you need to provide any services for your product
- No services need to be provided

Sustainability - Summary
For the first week of this hurumanu we watched a documentary on Netflix on Coronavirus and how it was made and developed. Then we were looking about sustainability and what it is. In the second week of this hurumanu we were learning about statistical inquiry and how to collect our data using graphs. The graphs we used were pie, bar, line and stacked bar graphs I used the pie or the stacked bar graph because they are the easier ones. In the third week of this hurumanu we were looking at natural resources and more of sustainability but first we did a few activitys about natural resources but before that we learned about what are natural resources and their definitions. In week four we watched some videos about writing and why we do it, then we were learning about writing on sustainability issues. In week five we did a writing (cont) and research about sustainability issues. In week six-eight we did some maths and been learning about area, population and calculations on mathletics, our teacher also taught us about measurements. Then in week eight we learnt about applications of area, perimeter and volume so what we did with that is we made things with 3D on tinkercad. In week nine we did a revision and a catch up on mathletics and then we did a assesment on mathletics. In week nine-thirteen we did a sustainability report on a topic of our choice. Towards this topic we did a research about our topic for our essay that we did. After that a few weeks after that we got to choose to make a game on game fruit or on a game website or we got to make a board game about a sustainability topic. My group chose to make a board game but we didn't have enough time to finish making the board, we did our board based of monopoly and gumption.
Here is a photo of our board that we didn't get to finish because we didn't have enough time. I dont like any of the colours but we did the board game about endangered animals. Here is the draft and planning on making the board game.
- Tiger
- Gorilla
- Giant pandas
- Black rhino
- Aisan elephant
- Orangutans
- Snow leopard
- Leatherback sea turtle
- Aim of the game is to collect 3 full sets of animals to win
- Maximum of 3 resource cards per animal
- You have to trade your way out of trouble by selling some of your resources.
- The bank isn't allowed to buy back anything
- You can trade some of your resources to another player
- If you go to jail you have to miss your next turn or pay $200 to get out
- If you go pass go you can collect $200 from the bank
- If you land on tax you have to pay $150
- One player is the banker
- Maximum of 4 players
- Place the risk cards and the SE cards down on the board
- Give each player 10x $1 10x $5 10x $10 10x $20 4x $100 2x $500
Critical reflection:
I really liked this hurumanu because it was very fun to do and I learned alot on sustainability and writing. I would of liked Mr Carter to give us more time on this board game so we could finish it.
